About six months ago, for the first time in memory, we were all sent home from school. We had to stay in our homes and, there for a while, it felt like we were risking our lives just to go to the grocery store. The shelves were bare, there was no toilet paper or other basics to be found, and fellow shoppers looked scared. Doctors and nurses were crying in interviews. Refrigerated trucks were used as makeshift morgues. We worried about our families but we couldn’t visit them, and the senior communities where our parents and grandparents live went into lockdown. Millions and millions of people lost their jobs. We felt helpless and horrified and scared. That’s trauma.
Now, our schools are resuming – whether in-person or online – and students who also experienced trauma and anxiety are returning. How do we care for them? How do we care for ourselves at a time such as this? Information about trauma, anxiety, and self-care is vital right now for education professionals.
Topics Covered Include:
• Understanding the impact of trauma
• Anxiety in students and in ourselves
• A trauma-informed return to school
• Coping skills and classroom strategies
• Secondary traumatic stress (Compassion Fatigue)
• Creating a resilience plan
